Broadway
This is my contribution to my Picture Story class’ Broadway project, which attempts to tell stories about Columbia through Broadway Avenue, the main road that passes through downtown. My component of this project was to set the scene of Broadway as such a main artery, and tell the story of people who commute along it.
My classmates Laura Herring and Lillian Kelly helped me out so much this last week. Laura actually learned how to pilot a tandem bicycle I borrowed from my friend Caitlin Giddings and braved Broadway Avenue just so I could ride alongside Fred Schmidt and shoot video of him riding his cargo bike. Lilli was kind enough to drive me up and down Broadway in her Jeep with the hood off, so I could stick my head out the top and record the journey down the road.
I was really shaky for a while about how this was going to come together. I had tons of footage and audio to sort through but wasn’t quite sure what my story was, or how I was going to tell it. The only thing I really had in mind were the time-lapse video of cars pumping through Broadway, to play on this “artery” metaphor. Almost all of this came together in the editing process, where I had to move all these bits and pieces around until they started to shape something that looked right. I also opted to use music, I hope it’s not too distracting.
Beautifully told!
I think it came together really, really well. I might lower the volume of the music just a bit more–sometimes its hard to hear Fred Schmidt–but otherwise think it looks and sounds great.
Too bad about the crap on the camera’s sensor–it’s a little distracting at times. The two 5D II’s we have get so much use that I can never clean them.
